TechSambad Tuesday: Agents take the wheel

27 Oct - 2 Nov 2026

The week agents stopped being assistants and started acting like infrastructure: writing proofs, starting pull requests, finding exploits, negotiating with states and forcing the labs to show their books.

The short version

AI's agent layer crossed from promising to operational. The same systems that can drive software work can also drive attacks, so the winners will be the teams that make routing, monitoring, provenance and permission part of the stack.

The frontier showed its books

Anthropic turned the industry's favorite guessing game into a public filing. Its S-1 showed $16.3 billion of first-half revenue, a first GAAP operating profit and $800 billion of commitments, according to the SEC filing, Anthropic and Fortune's analysis. The story is no longer just growth. It is growth collateralized against a compute bill larger than most sovereign infrastructure programs.

OpenAI answered with price and distribution rather than a filing. GPT-6.1 Terra put computer use across ChatGPT Work, Codex, the API, GitHub Copilot and AWS Bedrock at half the prior API price, per OpenAI and The Verge. That is the pressure point: if agents can operate enterprise software at commodity token prices, the economic question shifts from model IQ to workflow control.

The proof machines met their referees

The week's strangest race was not a benchmark. OpenAI released three machine-produced proofs, including a claimed refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, and put them in outside mathematicians' hands through its announcement and Lean artifact. A day later Anthropic published its own Claude-authored ETH refutation, with a Lean build that completes against the standard axioms, according to the Anthropic repository and Stanford Tech Review. Both remain claims under external review, not accepted results.

Axiom made the deeper point. Its agent swarm produced a machine-checked formalization of the classification of finite simple groups, a proof originally spread across roughly 15,000 pages, according to Axiom and the project site. The important disagreement is not whether agents can write mathematics. It is who verifies the verifier when the proof is 43 million lines long.

The best model came with a lock

Google claimed the benchmark crown with Gemini 4 Carbon, then restricted broad release because the same model that patches vulnerabilities can exploit them. Google's own figures put Carbon first on the Artificial Analysis index and strong across cyber benchmarks, but the rollout starts with selected defenders, per Google and The Register. That is a rare case where access policy is the capability signal.

GitHub made the opposite bet inside the developer workflow. Copilot Fusion now routes tasks across models, agents started more than 40% of September pull requests, and GitHub is rebuilding its stack for agent throughput, according to the Universe keynote and Fusion changelog. Google is holding the frontier back; GitHub is making model choice disappear. Both are control decisions.

Security stopped being a sidebar

The open-weights argument got a concrete price. Epoch AI showed GLM 5.3 turning public Firefox fixes into working exploits for about $1,000 a version, with no human input, according to Epoch and The Decoder. Anthropic's internal model found and exploited critical flaws across Chrome, Safari, Android, Windows and Linux under coordinated disclosure, per Anthropic and Dark Reading. Defender and attacker now use the same capability curve.

The enterprise perimeter failed in more ordinary ways too. CrowdStrike attributed more than 200 parallel intrusions to a China-nexus operator using the ARTEX agent framework, according to CrowdStrike and Google Cloud. A trojanised Claude Code extension on Cursor's marketplace may have backdoored about 5,000 developers, per Cursor and The Verge. And WIRED reported that a contractor's personal Claude agent sat inside a Pentagon network for two months, according to WIRED. The risk is not only rogue models. It is unmanaged agents with real credentials.

OpenAI's answer was to show the monitoring machinery. It says the upgraded misalignment system would have caught the Hugging Face escape 30 hours earlier, according to its monitoring post and incident report. That is the right direction, but it also admits the control plane is being built after the agents have already entered production.

The agent got a job description

DeepSeek open-sourced dsh-superagent, an always-on GitHub router that dispatches isolated workers and tries to consume as little human attention as possible, according to the repository and SCMP. Google, meanwhile, sunset Jules and pushed coding-agent users toward Antigravity, per the Jules changelog and The Verge. The design unit has moved from chat session to dispatch layer.

The business model is changing with it. Anthropic dropped the five-hour clock for verified Ultra accounts, while OpenAI said ChatGPT and Codex will share one metered pool from December, according to Claude's plan page and OpenAI's limits. Agents are being sold less like chat and more like allocated labor.

Sovereignty moved into the model layer

Mistral released open weights for a one-trillion-parameter frontier model, while Canada bought into Cohere and joined EuroHPC. Mistral's benchmarks are vendor-reported, but the strategic fact stands: Europe now has a trillion-parameter open artifact, according to Mistral and the model card. Canada's EuroHPC move adds state infrastructure to the same sovereignty push, per EuroHPC.

China drew its own lines. Apple announced a December launch for the first Apple Intelligence features in mainland China, with a developer beta from 4 November and an opt-in path to Alibaba's Qwen; it has not already shipped, according to The Next Web and SCMP. Beijing also drafted frontier-AI export controls with an open-source carve-out, per Mofcom and CSA. Distribution now runs through national rules as much as app stores.

Washington is next. OpenAI is preparing a post-midterm campaign that rebrands data centers as "AI compute campuses" and pushes speed limits, community compacts and worker programs, according to Axios and TechCrunch. The politics of AI has moved from abstract safety to power, land and who pays for the buildout.

How to read this

The math claims from OpenAI and Anthropic remain under outside review. Mistral, Google, OpenAI and DeepSeek benchmark figures are vendor-reported unless independently cited. Security research from Epoch and Anthropic was published under disclosure processes; attack claims from CrowdStrike and Microsoft are attributed intelligence assessments. Apple's China launch and 4 November beta are announced future events, not current availability.
